Ceramic objects by Nonna Hoogland

Nonna Hoogland uses mythical beauty to touch upon womanhood, power, and humanity.

About the objects: Nonna Hoogland creates drawings, paintings, and ceramic sculptures centered around powerful, vulnerable, and emotional figures reminiscent of Amazons. In a mythical world of recurring symbols, they carry emotions, conflicts, and ideas. Her richly detailed work, adorned with gold, pearls, and flowers, entices the viewer to also approach confronting themes. For Hoogland, mythology and art history serve as a mirror for current questions regarding power, morality, and human relationships. Womanhood is her lens in this process: her figures are simultaneously seductive, caring, furious, and powerful. Through beauty, confusion, and social criticism, she does not seek to explain, but to touch—and offer connection and solace through recognition.

About the designer: Nonna Hoogland (1999, Utrecht) graduated with Honours in Illustration from the HKU in 2023. Based in Utrecht, she works with ceramics, drawings, and paintings. In her feminist visual language, she connects mythology, art history, and current societal themes, while questioning patriarchal structures. Her work has been shown at OBJECT Rotterdam, Paper Positions Berlin, and Dutch Design Week, among others. She has exhibited at Moving Gallery, No Limits Art Castle, and EXboot, and created murals for Volkshotel and Parnassos, among others. Hoogland was nominated for the KF Hein Art and Design Prize 2026 and won the HKU Award and Manifestations Young Talent Award in 2023. She is currently working on an installation about a fictional matriarchal society.
