Slate is a metamorphic rock that is dense, strong, stain resistant and non-absorbent. The most exclusive and fine quality slate is found underground and needs to be mined and is therefore premium priced. Red slate is caused by hematite, green by chlorite, blue-gray by sericite, black by carbonaceous materials and yellowish-brown by limonite.
